All believers experience, or have, and from time to time, experienced, a crippling struggle. That crippling struggle is believing or thinking that, ‘God is not really on my side’. It’s a scary thing being alone – feeling that there is no one on your side. And it’s scarier if you believe that not even God is on your side either.
When Doubts Arise
There are many reasons why we might think this. We might have had a bad tragedy in our life, maybe the loss of a loved one – a child, husband, wife or friend. Maybe we’ve become very sick. Maybe other trials. Maybe all of these things happened to us in a short space of time and this has made us feel like ‘God is not for me – He’s against me – He’s not on my side!’
Or, we might have some very bad sins in our life. Or, maybe we might be struggling with the same sin over and over and over again. Maybe it’s our failings which have made us feel that ‘God can’t possibly be on my side. Look at me! How could He be on my side when I’m like this?’ Or, maybe we’ve felt like the people in our life aren’t really on our side – that we’ve never received much support from them, nobody has really supported us, or even, perhaps, have been actively against us! And this might’ve convinced us that God is the same: ‘If all these people are against me, surely it’s likely that God is too!’
Or, maybe we have grown up being taught some very untrue things about God – that God is rigorous, strict, rough, taxing, punishing, short tempered. Maybe we’ve heard a lot about God’s unwavering passion for holiness, to the exclusion of His unwavering passion to show love and mercy and to save. Maybe all of these things have happened to us!
So, whatever the reason may be, at some point or another, the chances are, you have thought that God is against you; God is opposed to you; God is not on your side; God doesn’t want good for you. Is this true?
Is God Against Us?
As much as there might be evidence to suggest that God is against us, is that ultimately true about Him? Please read the following words carefully:
“We can understand someone dying for a person worth dying for… But God put His love on show for us by offering His Son in sacrificial death while we were of no use to Him whatsoever.” – Romans 5:7-8 The Message;
“This is how much God loved the world: He gave His Son, His one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn’t go to all the trouble of sending His Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again.” – John 3:16 The Message;
“It’s a wonder God didn’t lose His temper and do away with the whole lot of us. Instead, immense in mercy and with incredible love, He embraced us. He took our sin-dead lives and made us alive in Christ. He did all this on His own, with no help from us! The He picked us up and set us down in the highest heaven in company with Jesus, our Messiah.” – Ephesians 2:4-6 The Message;
“God showed His love for us when He sent His only Son into the world to give us life. Real love isn’t our love for God, but His love for us. God sent His Son to be the sacrifice by which our sins are forgiven.” – 1 John 4:9,10 CEV
God Is Working Toward Your Supreme Good
God giving His Son to the world, to die and to be raised, for the salvation of a sinful and dead world, teaches us, I believe, first and foremost, God is not against us. God is for the human race more than we could ever know. God is on our side more than we could ever know.
Read these words carefully:
“If God is so much for us, how can we lose? If God is on our side so much that He freely gave His own Son for us all, will God withhold anything from those who belong to Jesus? No! Everything is coming our way because everything came Jesus’ way! Who will judge us now? No one will! God certainly won’t, because He is the one who removed all judgement from us! Who will condemn us now? No one will! Christ Jesus certainly won’t, because he is the one who died for us, who was raised from the dead for us and is at the right hand of God right now doing what? Standing by you to help you! No, I don’t think Jesus will condemn you—he died for you, I don’t think he’s your enemy.” – Romans 8:31-34
It is strictly not okay to believe that God is against you – especially as a believer in Jesus! You don’t get to say that God doesn’t care for you; you don’t get to say that God is not on your side; you don’t get to say that He doesn’t love you – that’s not your call. God has given too much for you for you to have a say in the matter, no matter what is going on in your life. There is nothing more for Him to give to show us whose side He is on.
God, through Paul, goes on to say this:
“In light of what God and Jesus have given for us, could anything make you think that they don’t love you? Could trouble or hard times make you think God doesn’t love you? What about distress, or people hating and hurting you? What about if you had no food, or you were naked, or in danger? What about dying by the sword? And these things happen to believers! As it is written, “Because we stand with you, God, we are being killed all the day long; it’s like we are sheep waiting to be slaughtered”. But no! None of these things make us doubt God’s love! We conquer them all because God has shown He loves us so much! There is no doubt in my mind that nothing, nothing dead or alive, no angel or ruler of this world, nothing now and nothing in the future, no power, nothing above or below, in fact, nothing that has ever been created, will diminish God’s love for us in Christ Jesus our Lord. That’s right, absolutely nothing should ever make you think that God does not love you, or is not on your side—because He is—more than you and I could ever know.” – Romans 8:35-39
Trust That God Is On Your Side
If the Bible is the true revelation of God, then its clear teaching is this: there is nothing that could happen to you which could ever indicate that God doesn’t love you. He has given too much for us to make that thought possible. It’s time to put to bed the lie that God is not on our side.
God wants you feeling safe with Him. Like any Father – and He is our Father – He wants His children to know they are safe with Him, that He is on their side, and feel that way. God is a loving Father. I’m not saying that truly believing this suddenly fixes all life’s problems: no. There is still so much that feels so hard. But it is the greatest thing we could ever have to accompany us through all the mess in our lives.
